As if twerking in public wasn’t already confusing women into throwing out all of their class, self-respect and self-worth, rapper Juicy J has now confused them even more. He has announced via Twitter that not only is he offering a cash reward for the woman who twerks the hardest, but that cash is to be used for a college scholarship. Initially, I hung my head in shame while thinking about the hundreds of thousands of young women who would actually participate in this contest. Among those women would probably be quite a few who found twerking in public degrading beforehand but now considered it to afford an education, which is expensive to say the least.
Some have said that they find nothing wrong with the scholarship because it could fully pay for the student’s tuition. But if you do have the money to dish out and fund a student’s schooling, why not hold a different type of contest? A contest that does not include a girl subjecting herself to raunchy dancing for the world to see and judge to afford herself an education.
Juicy J has since apparently found some decency and has deleted the tweet which offered the scholarship to “the best chick who can twerk.” He has announced instead that he has partnered with Worldstarhiphop.com to launch the “Juicy J Scholarship Foundation” competition. The rapper will be giving female fans an opportunity to win a $50,000 scholarship to their school. According to the press release, the scholarship is “out of the kindness of his heart” and is open to all young women ages 18 to 25, currently enrolled in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.
To enter the competition, young adults must post YouTube videos set to Juicy J’s “Scholarship,” explaining why they deserve the prize. Contestants will be judged on their “assets” and creativity. This still sounds like a call to twerkers, however, seeing that the lyrics to his song “Scholarship” state: “You a college chick, keep twerking baby, might earn you a scholarship.” Fathers, be good to your daughters...
