The 105th NAACP National Convention is just days away and Houston has a lot to brag about!!!!
This year's convention will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada July 19th – 23rd, 2014. With the theme, "ALL IN FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY, the NAACP will welcome its newly-elected NAACP President & CEO, Cornell William Brooks and will highlight significant strides made to address social inequities that disproportionately affect minorities across the country. Convention delegates will also strategize to address one of the most pending issues of our day: Voting Rights and How To Increase Black Voter Turn-Out In The 2014 Mid-Term Elections.
The NAACP Houston Branch is proud to announce that Houstonians will take center stage throughout this year's convention. Houston native and NAACP Houston Branch member Ernest Walker, President of Walker Entertainment Group has partnered with the NAACP and will be showcased in producing all of the entertainment for this year’s convention.
Ernest Walker, a professional drummer with more than 20 years of music industry experience, established Walker Entertainment Group (W.E.G) in 1991. Since its establishment W.E.G has grown to be an acclaimed firm with an outstanding reputation and a high level of professionalism. W.E.G has hosted countless successful events for the NAACP Houston Branch, United Way, The Houston Urban League, The City of Houston, Mayor Bill White, Grambling State University and Texas Southern University, just to name a few.
Beginning with the Gospel Extravaganza on Tuesday July 22nd, the event will feature Shawn McLemore, Anita Wilson and Houston’s very own Stellar Award winner, James Fortune and FIYA. Following what is sure to be a night of high energy inspiration, the Freedom Fund Banquet Dinner on Wednesday, July 23rd will feature a tribute to living legend Mr. Quincy Jones, who will be receiving this year's coveted NAACP Spingarn Medal.
The tribute to Mr. Quincy Jones will feature the Ernest Walker Band that includes, Kyle Turner, Werner Richmond, Terence Vaughn, Glen Piper, Mat Underwood, Nick McNack, Andre James, Liz Vaughn, Tekai Hicks and J. Xaiver. In addition, Mr. Walker has added a soulful arsenal of recording artists to the roster to include Chante Moore, Ruben Studdard, Ledisi, Angie Stone, Regina Belle, Terence Blanchard, Chloe and Halle, the ACT-SO young performers, and Las Vegas’ own Victory Missionary Baptist Church to perform during various convention events.
Many talented Houstonians are not only providing entertainment during this year’s convention; but they are setting a precedent through their gifts, showing that respect, acclaim and prestige can all be achieved through their respective musical outlets. And what better way to showcase their talents than by giving back to the NAACP, an institution for social justice and the oldest and largest civil rights organization in our country.
