The Texans reduced their roster to 53 on Saturday when they placed three draft choices on injured reserve. Those choices were offensive tackle Brennan Williams, outside linebacker Trevardo Williams and receiver Alan Bonner. Nose tackle Daniel Muir reached an injury settlement.
Brennan Williams, a third-round pick, has been suffering from a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery in May. Trevardo Williams, who had a team-high 3 ½ sacks in preseason, suffered an ankle injury in the last preseason game against Dallas. Bonner, a sixth-round pick, missed preseason with a hamstring injury.
Free safety Ed Reed was removed from the physically unable to perform list and moved to the active roster.
The offensive players that were waived include running back Dennis Johnson, receiver Andy Cruse, fullback Tyler Clutts, guard Tyler Horn, center Alex Kupper, tight end Jake Byrne, receiver EZ Nwachukwu and tackle Nate Menkin.
The defensive players released were nose tackle Chris Jones, inside linebacker Mike Mohamed, inside linebacker Cameron Collins, safety Jawanza Starling, safety Ohrian Johnson, end Keith Browner and end Delano Johnson.
The reduction means the Texans have kept four rookies who were undrafted free agents in linebacker Justin Tuggle, cornerback A.J. Bouye, running back Cierre Wood, and outside linebacker Willie Jefferson.
Defensive end Antonio Smith, who’s suspended for the San Diego game, doesn’t count against the roster until he’s reinstated on Sept. 10, the day after the opener.
Roc Carmichael heads the group of 8 players that were signed to the practice squad. After being released from the Texans Saturday, rumors were that he was in talks with Philadelphia but ended up with Houston.
The Texans face the San Diego Chargers for Monday Night Football on September 9.
