NJCAA Announces 2011-12 Academic Student-Athlete Award Winners

The National Junior College Athletic Association has released the names of the 2011-12 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.

Over 1,680 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual academic honors. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-12 academic year on over 3,500 teams in 28 different sports. The 2011-12 season marks the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.

Adidas to become outfitter of the Rice Owls

Adidas and the Rice Owls athletic program have agreed on a new contract that will see the company become the official apparel supplier for the Owls through the 2017-18 academic year. The announcement, which was made by Rice Athletic Director Rick Greenspan, will debut their partnership when the Owls host UCLA on August 30th at Rice Stadium in the kickoff game of the 2012 football season.

“Adidas made their interest in Rice very clear and we are thrilled to join their family of schools who proudly wear their distinctive branding and enjoy the benefits of their consistently innovative approach. Our student-athletes have shared their excitement about this partnership and I know our fans will be equally excited to see what Adidas has in mind,” Greenspan stated. The implementation of the agreement will be staggered over the next year, with the Owls football team changing over for the 2012 season and the remainder of the Owls intercollegiate teams making the switch during the 2013-14 academic year.

San Jacinto College to host basketball camp in July

San Jacinto College will host its 2012 basketball camp July 23-27 at the Central Campus. The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 7-18, and it will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. inside Anders Gymnasium.

Coaches will provide beginners with the basic fundamentals of the game, while helping more advanced players develop.
