As a volunteer in the Organizing for America office during June, there was a constant request for campaign buttons, yard signs and other campaign memorabilia. The only option was to go online and place orders. I found most people resistant to this form of shopping, for the following reasons:
The last straw for me was when an 80 year old man drove all the way from Fresno, Texas to Houston, not once but twice, for yard signs and there were none available. I realized that President Obama, as the first African American President, seemed to stir a feeling of both pride and a sense of history. I discovered that people in our community want to display their pride and support with t-shirts, caps, buttons, glasses and many of the other items we offer.
Obama Store Houston
You know the saying, Supply and Demand! After finding a vendor with the campaign products needed, I began to sell merchandise from my car. And the items sold out quickly.
We realized that we had to have a store for people to visit and see all the products we offer. The search for space did not take long. Thanks to Gerald Womack of Womack Development we found a home for the Obama Store Houston!
The closer we get to the election the demand for Obama products has increased. Now the community not only has a place to purchase products, but the Obama Store Houston is also a cool place to come and hang out and discuss the upcoming election.
My daughters (Detral Johnson, Dionne Franklin) and I opened the Obama Store on Saturday October 6, 2012. Since we opened, the store has received customers from as far away as Mississippi, Dallas, Beaumont, Brazoria County, Galveston County and Fort Bend County.
We want the community to know we are open and provide a positive atmosphere for shopping and positive political discussions.
We are open seven days, Monday through Saturday 9:30 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Come in and get your piece of history.
