The city of Houston is known for a lot of first throughout it’s storied history of famous people who have accomplished much.
Like the legendary Ralph Cooper, Sports Director of KCOH Radio, Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans, or even Baylor’s Brittney Griner who scored 25 points, including the 3,000th of her career in a huge 76-70 victory over the Connecticut Huskies on national television.
These are just a few of Houston’s most accomplished sports personalities; however, Houston recently had another first when Comcast SportsNet Houston hired Tiffany Blackmon as the first black female sports anchor in the city.
Blackmon, 28 , is a Sports Anchor & Reporter for Comcast Sportsnet Houston. The Atlanta, Georgia native joined the network from NBC affiliate KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
At KFOR Tiffany worked with a four-man team. She got to cover the Oklahoma City Thunder a lot and attend the 2012 NBA Finals, which featured the Thunder and the Miami Heat.
Prior to OKC, Blackmon served as the Sports Director at KXXV-TV in Waco, Texas. In Waco, she had to operate as a one person team and she was the first black to take on the role of Sports Director in the area.
“I loved story telling more than being in front of the camera,” Blackmon said. “I got to cover the Baylor Bears a lot and various other sporting events that came into the area.”
Tiffany earned her degree in Journalism/Telecommunications at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where she played soccer on a collegiate scholarship all four years for the Panthers. She realized early that following in her father’s (Donald Blackmon) footsteps, she wanted to do something in sports cause of her love for writing. Her dad played professionally for the New England Patriots and he later worked in the National Football League for a total of 27 years. It was her professors who too had a huge impact on her future.
“I had great professors at Georgia State,” Blackmon stated. “I knew that I would have to start small to get my foot in the door, so after graduating I got my first experience working in live TV as a production assistant at The Weather Channel in Atlanta. I worked there for 1 ½ years and then I got my first real job.”
Prior to working in the state of Texas, Tiffany landed her first on-air job as the Weekend Sports anchor at KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It was here were she got to cover general news assignments during the week and do sports on the weekends. It was at KPLC that she had to edit, produce and learn how to do in all in the television industry.
Although Tiffany calls the “Peach State” her home, she was originally born in Massachusetts; however due to her family always moving, she also lived in Ohio and New Jersey before her family planted their roots in Georgia in 1997.
“People used to ask me if I was a military brat because we moved around just about every four years. It was the moving around that I feel helped me to adjust to the career that I’m in today.”
Since being at Comcast SportsNet Houston, Tiffany mainly gets to cover all news pertaining to the Houston Rockets. Blackmon, along with co-host Bart Ennis do a show on CSN called “Rockets All-Access”.
She’s excited about being the first black female sports anchor in Houston for any television affiliate and she hopes to use this platform to bless others.
“It’s important for kids, especially girls to have a positive role model,” Blackmon said. “By me working at CSN I hope to use this platform to help kids in need.”
“I’ve always liked helping people if they needed it and I love to work with kids.”
Tiffany has learned that in the media business that “you have to do what you have to do, to work your way up.” And she’s willing to become more patient as she makes her continued climb because she knows what she’s capable of and how important it is to wait for the right opportunities!
