The 85th Annual Academy Awards show was a parade of silk, chiffon, diamonds, lace, and disappointment. While many stars vied for the coveted Oscar award, they arrived at the red carpet hoping to at least be awarded best dressed. Here are a few of my favorite looks of the night.
At the top of my list is Catherine Zeta- Jones who wore a golden Zuhair Murad gown. Many critics were split on her look for the evening but I think she truly embodied a movie star as she walked the red carpet. She completed her look with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Star of this years breakout film Django Unchained Kerry Washington wore a beautiful Miu Miu gown. Her bold choice of a brightly colored coral and crystal studded bodice made her one of the standouts of the night. Zoe Saldana arrived in Alexis Mabille couture. The white French sihouette gown was complimented beautifully by her Neil Lane jewels. While I didn’t see much of her during the program I think she may have been there to support her on again off again boyfriend, and Best Actor nominee, Bradley Cooper. Jennifer Hudson showed off her brand new figure in a form fitting blue Roberto Cavalli gown. With a classy mixture of tranparency and lace, Cavalli’s creation gave off a reptile or scaled look. Jennifer never missed an opportunity to show off her blue Jimmy Choo pump through the thigh high split when photographed. Jennifer also stole the show during the broadway medley as she belted out ‘And I am Telling You.’ Cutie-pie, and youngest Oscar nominee in history, Quvenzhané Willis looked age appropriately dressed in a beautiful navy blue Armani gown. She carried an adorable puppy purse which is quickly becoming her signature red carpet accessory. Jennifer Lawrence had her big moment accepting the Oscar for Best Actress. Unfortunately this moment was not too long after her other big moment...falling up the stairs to accept the award. Jennifer handled it like a pro as she made light of it and humbly accepted the Oscar for her performance in ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ She wore Dior Haute Couture designed by Raf Simons. The gown was beautifully accented with a Chopard necklace she wore backwards. I was probably most delighted to see “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts hit the red carpet in a blue velvety Marc Bouwer gown. It was nearly a year ago at the 2012 Oscars when Robin first discovered something was amiss with her health. After a long battle this must have been a great moment for her.
Essence BWH 2013
Top African-American women in the film industry including Oprah Winfrey, Gabrielle Union and Alfre Woodard were honored this year at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event. Everyone looked great but as usual a few stood out among the crowd. I though Oprah Winfrey and her crew, which consisted of a few of the students from her academy, looked lovely. I also thought Alani Anthony aka “LaLa” made a great choice. Finally, one of my favorite actresses Sanaa Lathan impressed in a little black dress.
This week’s style rewind features this same Essence event last year and some of my favorite looks. Clad in white in 2012 the ladies looked lovely as ever. One of my favorite looks was Paula Patton who wore a tight Marchesa dress. Also Ms. ‘Scandal ‘herself Kerry Washington and star of ‘The Help’ Emma Stone looked great in their outfits of choice.
Until next time...
Alani "LaLa" Anthony
