The Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova rivalry has left the tennis court and gotten very personal!

So, just weeks after Serena beat Maria for the French Open trophy, she fired shots in a Rolling Stone interview. Although she didn’t mention Maria by name, the interviewer and everyone else, including myself, assumed it was her.

Serena has been quoted saying: “There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest.” When the conversation shifted to a top-five player who is now in love (obviously Maria Sharapova), Serena throws Regina George, Mean Girls, ‘You can’t sit with us’ shade and says:

“She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’SerenaMariam so lucky’ - it’s so boring... She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”   (Maria is dating one of Serena’s rumored exes, FYI.)

Maria has recently snapped back in a press conference saying that instead of worrying about what she’s doing, Serena needs to be worried about her own boyfriend, Patrick, who is possibly still married!

During the pre-tournament press conference, Maria was asked about Serena’s indirect shade in her Rolling Stone Interview. Maria responded:

“Obviously I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she’s achieved on the court. If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things.”

Well played, Maria, well played.
