The Issue: Abortion is believed to have “infected” many African-American communities decreasing about 1/3 of our current population. Being a minority race, this controversial subject brings about a great argument. Texas abortion restrictions are on the verge of closing abortion clinics. Many women who are asked their views on abortion choose the liberalist standpoint of pro-choice, and disagree strongly with the government regulating/restricting what goes on with their bodies.

Question: When is abortion ever acceptable? Are you pro-choice or pro-life?

JJohnson

Jonathan Johnson  - “I feel that abortion is never acceptable. There are so many other options, including adoption. I’m pro-life because as humans we didn’t give life, so we don’t have the right to take it away.”

RArzu

Raul Arzu - “Abortion is acceptable if having a baby will ruin your life or your partner’s life. It’s recommended if you don’t have the resources to take care of the child, or if you’re raped. I’m pro-choice because it would be my girlfriend’s decision to do what she wants with her body, not mine or the government.”

KAlaoKemi Alao - “I think the subject is very controversial. I’m pro-life because of my religious beliefs, but on the contrary, I’m sympathetic to women who get pregnant from rape and are unfortunately left with a baby that they can’t be responsible for. But even in a troubling situation like that, I don’t think abortion should be considered.”JJordan

Justin Johnson  - “I believe abortion is only acceptable in teenage years. As teenagers we don’t have the means to provide for a child. Teen pregnancy is a hindrance to the community and I think abortion can alleviate that. I’m pro-choice.”

What do we think?

As delicate of a topic that abortion is, there’s not a single way to justify taking the life of a developing child. Rape is one of the only situations resulting in an aborted pregnancy that would not be frowned upon in our society. An optimist may argue that a “rape child” should be considered a gift. Abortion is a painful thing to think about, especially when we live in a nation with a multitude of women who are unable to conceive and/or carry a child full term. Nevertheless, the government should not regulate what women do with their bodies because everyone in the nation does not think like a religious conservative or a humanist for that matter.
