The Houston Area Urban League held its annual gala recently.

The gala had a large turn out of some of Houston’s finest and brightest. Spotted among the guests were Darian Ward, in a jaw dropping blue floral print fitted off the shoulder gown, accented with rhinestone studded strappy high heel sandals, Judge Clarease Yates in a fitted white gown with black detailing, accenting her mermaid shaped figure, gone Judge, with yo bad self, and Chelsi Morrow in a fitted gold gown with rhinestone halter straps.

All three ladies dress to thrill! Also among the guests were Carl Davis, Mary Benton, Cary Yates and too many more to mention.

DIVA SIGHTINGS

Guess who I ran into last week while at a funeral repass? None other than one of Houston’s first business women - Jessie Nelson. Jessie opened the I. L. A. Café in 1935, located next to the International Longshoreman Association building, down at the waterfront, and stayed in business until 1982. Jessie and her late husband Samuel G. Nelson opened a nite club called “Tropicana” were they served seafood to the club patrons, in 1950 located on Scott St. In 1984 they changed it over to be a soul food restaurant called “Bunky’s Café”, named after their first grand-daughter, Jessica, whose nickname was Bunky. Mr. Nelson died in 2000, and Jessie still owns the café. She has been approved to build a assisted living facility next to the café; about 3 acres, with an anticipated ground-breaking in 2013! And I bet you, she will be there. Jessie is sassy as ever, toting a new daumier print Louis Vuitton bag, dressed to impress, had a rock on her hand that nearly blinded me when I tried to sit next to her for the photo op, and is still a regular at Neiman Marcus, Galleria. She is 90 years young, still walks, un-assisted, and drives around Third Ward in a 2011 big black S55 Mercedes Benz. Jessie had her only child, Cheryl Nelson in tow along with her great grand-daughter Skyler. Known as GG to her grandchildren - GG, the pleasure was all mine.

KEEP HOUSTON GREEN

Big turnout of over 200 people over at Habernero’s recently as Larry Green celebrated his “Larry Green for City Council, District K” campaign kick-off fundraiser. Great time had by all. To my fellow Madison Marlin – go Larry!WHISPERS IN THE WIND – (A Little Dirt for the Day)Just got voted into office not long ago and already trying to jump over the chain of command, policy and procedures and go firing people all by yoself? I guess you thought she would take all that lying down. Have no idea she would go straight to the newsmedia, hire some highfalutin attorneys to start legal wrangling and got to rolling her head around and went into a black girl tirade. Well, looks like, girlfriend kicked up so much dust, she gonna get her job back, showing you just cuz you at the helm of the organization………BLACK GIRLS ROCK!

Until next time, please, keep it fabulous!
