Manvel senior duo of quarterback Julian Walker and running back Trenard Taplin combined for 341 yards of total offense and 5 touchdowns to help the Mavericks capture the District 24-4A Championship with a 44-21 victory over the Dawson Eagles at “The Rig” in Pearland, Texas.
The win caps off a 10-0 regular season and it gives the Mavericks their 1st District Championship in just four years of varsity football.
After a slow start, Julian Walker combined for 173 yards of offense, which included 125 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and he passed for 48 yards and another touchdown.
Taplin joined Walker and pounded Dawson by rushing 13 times for 168 yards and one touchdown.
“Julian did a phenomenal job tonight,” Manvel head football coach Kirk Martin said. “Our defensive unit led by lineman Glynn Cheeks and Taiwan Johnson kept the pressure going during the entire game.”
“I am so proud of our team and what our kids have accomplished.”
Manvel, (6-0 in district), clinched the District 24-4A title, their first outright. They will go to the Class 4A, Division II playoffs and face El Campo in the first round.
Dawson (8-2,4-2), which heads into the playoffs on a two-game losing streak, is in the Class 4A, Division I bracket. They will face Lamar Consolidated Thursday night at Traylor Stadium in bi-district play.
