Texas Southern University has named former Shaw University coach as the new head coach of the Tigers, after an extensive search over the past month.

Asberry, 39, was hired by TSU Athletic Director Charles McClelland. He becomes the 15th football coach in school history, beating out interim coach Kevin Ramsey. Ramsey, who recently completed his third season with the program, directed the defense in 2010, when the Tigers finished with the No. 1 defense in the Football Championship Subdivision. Despite its 4-7 mark in 2011, TSU is on track to finish first in total defense among FCS programs for the second consecutive season.

The Bears went 3-7 this season but won three Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships from 2007-2010. His teams were 30-13 in the CIAA , making appearances in the Division II playoffs in 2007 and 2010.

“We wanted somebody who had a history of winning championships and a history of graduating student-athletes,” McClelland said. “When we looked at Asberry, he had all of the attributes we were looking for to lead the program.”

Prior to arriving at TSU, Asberry coached at Shaw in 2006. He spent two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina Central. He also has experience as a coach in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having served on Jackson State’s offensive staff from 1999-2002.

Due to the announcement coming during the Christmas break, Asberry will be formally introduced at a news conference on January 3, 2012. He will talk with current TSU assistant coaches in the coming days before deciding the makeup of his staff.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Asberry relished the opportunity to lead the Tigers as they prepare to move into the Dynamo’s new downtown facility in 2012.

“With the leadership of Dr. McClelland and TSU president Dr. John Rudley, I couldn’t be in a better place right now, and there’s no where else I’d want to be.”
