The purpose of Hymns for Him is to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of African American sacred music, and V. Michael McKay in partnership with Yolanda Adams, endeavors to EXPOSE individuals to the timeless melodies and profound messages of gospel music, to EDUCATE the now and next generations concerning the experiences that evoked their passions and shaped their craft, and to EXALT God, the Inspiration and Creative Source of this exceptional American music tradition. The release of God Talk: Sounds of a Sanctuary will further accomplish this mission.
Hymns for Him 2011 recognized the contributions of gifted music ministers in the Houston area, celebrated the accomplishments of legendary gospel music icons, awarded scholarships to exceptional and talented students of music, and featured the release of the book Hymns for Him, the first hymnal supplement of its kind documenting 62 hymns penned by V. Michael McKay.
A prolific composer and modern day hymnist, V. Michael McKay began writing in 1971, and his first recorded song, Wait ‘Til the Morning Comes, initiated a series of meaningful published melodies. GIA’s African American Heritage Hymnal and the For the Living of These Days, a Southern Baptist Hymnal Supplement, captures some of McKay’s works in print. Gospel music artists, such as Yolanda Adams (The Battle is the Lord’s), Tramaine Hawkins (The Potter’s House), Byron Cage (Broken But Healed), and the late Albertina Walker (I’m Still Here) represent only a few recorded songs penned by McKay. As God continues to speak, V. Michael McKay continues to listen, and God Talk: Sounds of a Sanctuary is a product of their conversations.
