v39_prostateProstate cancer is the leading type of cancer in men in the United States, with over 240,000 men diagnosed and 30,000 thousand dying from it each year. Also, for reasons that are not completely understood, African-American men have the highest rates of prostate cancer in the U.S., as 1 in 5 will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. African-Americans are also 60% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 2.5 times likely to die of the disease.

Do you remember the song, “I get so emotional baby, every time I think of you. I get so emotional, baby, aint it shocking what ……… can do”? Now, you fill in the blank. I think I remember hearing the word “love” in that spot; but now-a-days, it would be appropriate to put the word “food” in that blank.

What is the single, most common problem that most dieters face when trying to lose weight? Will power? Nah. Temptation? Sometimes. Emotional eating? Bingo! That's why it takes so much more than good intentions and information about nutrition and exercise to be successful. The ability to manage difficult situations and feelings effectively--without turning to food and eating--is a necessary foundation of a successful weight loss plan and healthy lifestyle.

v38_vaccineNow more than ever, the population of the United States – the “melting pot” of all nations – is a mix of societies, cultures, beliefs, and attitudes that impact the health-care community.

Because of this “cultural gumbo,” few would argue that protection from infectious and communicable diseases is one of the health issues of greatest concern, and controversy.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “Some vaccine-preventable diseases, like pertussis (whooping cough) and chickenpox, remain common in the United States. On the other hand, other diseases prevented by vaccines are no longer common in this country because of vaccines. However, if we stopped vaccinating, even the few cases we have in the United States could very quickly become tens or hundreds of thousands of cases.”

Cv38_healthervical Cancer was once the leading cause of death from cancer in American women, but over the last 50 years, the number of new cervical cancer cases diagnosed each year has decreased by nearly three-quarters. Thanks to the widespread adoption of cervical screening which can detect changes in the cervix before they become cancer.

banner_val_weeks_healthJust like in a relationship, it is easy to ignore our skin when it is doing right. Most people can get away with just washing their skin and putting on a little petroleum jelly or moisturizer; but for those who may have problems with skin, maintenance can be all-consuming. For example acne can really challenge a woman’s confidence, eczema can make you uncomfortable with those itchy rashes, and even a problem as simple as dry skin can be very painful.

Dry skin doesn’t have a respect of person…in other words – DRY SKIN DOES NOT DESCRIMINATE. It can affect anyone. When normally hydrated skin loses too much water or oil, the results can be horribly dry skin.   Unfortunately aging skin becomes thinner and drier, leaving those in their 40’s and beyond more susceptible to dry skin.
