“Living Life with Her Smile”v24_MargaretteRobinsonOn August 28, 1935, the eighth of their nine children, Margarette, was born to Louis and Eunice Thompson in the small farming town of Baldwin, (St. Mary Parish) Louisiana.

Margarette, was baptized at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She attended the Parish public schools, Baldwin Elementary, Sager Brown Junior High and Franklin High Schools, graduating as Salutatorian of her graduating class. To her family, she was known as “Smilin’ Jack” because, like the 30’s comic character, her glowing smile never seemed to leave her face. Margarette’s jovial demeanor was always a joy to behold.

v22_MarvinWinansThree young men were arraigned Sunday in the assault and carjacking of Detroit pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans.

The office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy identified the suspects as Detroit residents Montoya Givens and Christopher Moorehead, both 20, and Brian K. Young, 18, of Macomb County’s Clinton Township, reports the Associated Press. They are charged with carjacking, unarmed robbery and conspiracy, said Maria Miller, Worthy’s spokeswoman.

If convicted, the trio could be sentenced to life in prison.

Throughout the diabolical devastation of slavery to the turbulent tragedies and injustices endured during the Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement, many southern evangelical preachers were on the wrong side of the issues. In 1845, during a gathering of White Southern Baptist ministers in Augusta Ga., there was a rippling internal controversy over whether slave owners could be missionaries in foreign countries while owning slaves. Thus, on the heels of being sharply divided over the issue of slavery, the Southern Baptist Convention was formed, breaking away from the American Baptist Home Mission Society.

I must make a confession. It has taken me a long time to get to the place where I am willing and comfortable to make such an admission. I think some of my friends will be shocked at what I have to say. I think it is time I come clean and confess. Sort of, clean the air, so to speak. Simply put, I used to believe in leprechauns. I know that comes as a shock to all of my friends. At a distance, I look like a very reasonable, well-adjusted person. And the further away the better I look. The same thing goes with my distant relatives. The more distant they are the more I like them. Nobody would suspect that I had such a problem. You cannot tell what burdens people are carrying just by looking at them. It all came to me by way of reading books. When I was a young person, I read many books that had to do with leprechauns, rainbows and pots full of gold at the end of those rainbows. I was young and naïve at the time and believed everything I read.

v20_Derrick HaddonFriday, May 4th marked the opening of the much anticipated movie “A Beautiful Soul” starring Deitrick Haddon, Harry Lennix, Robert Ri’chard and Lesley Ann Brandt in a Jeff Byrd film.

Under Jeff Byrd’s direction, the audience is taken on the spiritual journey of Andre’ Stephens, a self centered, womanizing, hip hop icon. Best friend Chris Scott, wonderfully played by Robert Ri’chard, serves as the voice of reason that falls upon deaf ears until a very unfortunate event ushers in the option for a change of fate.
