The Rotary Club of Houston has announced the 43rd Annual Rotary Lombardi Award Official Watch List for 2012.


The Rotary Lombardi Award is given to the nation’s top college lineman or linebacker each year. This year’s candidates earned a place on the official Watch List by: earning All-American honors last season; being named last season to their respective all-conference first team as determined by the conference’s head coaches; being projected to be an All-American or first team all-conference player for the coming season; or by nomination approved by the nominations committee.


Texas Longhorns senior DE Alex Okafor, junior DE Jackson Jeffcoat, junior LB Jordan Hicks and junior OG Mason Walters were four of several players named to the Watch List.

v31_FootballPlayerSouth Florida Bulls quarterback B.J. Daniels and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron have been named to the 2012 Davey O’Brien Watch List.

Daniels and McCarron is just one of 34 signal callers from around the country named to the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List. The award is given to the nation’s best quarterback each year and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards show that will be held on Thursday, December 6th at the Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

v29_mcclellandAthletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) presented the Texas Southern University Tigers Football Program as the 2010-11 recipient of the Academic Progress Rate(APR) Most Improved Award for the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The APR Most Improved Award recognizes one institution at each of the 14 FCS conferences that has the highest APR score improvement from the previous year. In addition, the Association also recognizes one institution from each conference that has the highest overall APR score. In all, 29 awards were given this year, due to a tie in the Ivy League for the highest APR score in 2010-11.

v25_FoundationStaffTampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Amobi Okoye hosted the 5th Annual Kickoff 4 Kids Celebrity Weekend with a series of events, June 8-9th in Houston, Texas.

Okoye and the Invictus 91 Foundation hosted their 1st Annual Golf Tournament at the Wildcat Golf Club located in Southwest Houston.

On Saturday afternoon, the 5th Annual Kickoff 4 Kids Celebrity Basketball game was held at the University of Houston Hofheinz Pavilion. The fun-filled family event benefitted Future Teachers of America, and attendees got to meet some of their favorite NFL stars and Houston Texans and other celebrities.
