v28_tomas_carterThe young coach turned the perennial loser into a legend by launching a streak of 138 straight victories. From 1992 to 2004, he guided his team to perhaps the greatest dynasty in sports history. Ladouceur’s Spartans inspired the ESPN documentary “The Greatest Streak.”

Mandalay acquired the rights to Neil Hayes’ 2003 book and now is in discussions with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group to team on the $20 million film, which is being prepped for a September start. Mandalay likely will assemble a cast of relative unknowns around a name actor to play Ladouceur, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

v26_MadeaTyler Perry returns as America’s favorite brash, no-holds-barred grandma in Lionsgate’s TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION, an outrageous culture clash comedy that also stars Eugene Levy, Denise Richards and Doris Roberts.

For years, George Needleman (Levy), the gentle CFO of a Wall Street investment bank, has been living with his head in the clouds. His frustrated second wife, Kate (Richards), has reached her limit taking care of his senile mother, Barbara (Roberts). His teenage daughter, Cindy (Danielle Campbell), is spoiled beyond hope and his seven-year-old son, Howie (Devan Leos), wishes his father were around more. But George is finally forced to wake up when he learns that his firm, Lockwise Industries, has been operating a mob-backed Ponzi scheme – and that he’s been set up as the fall guy.

v26_ArtTatumOne of the greatest improvisers in jazz history, Art Tatum also set the standard for technical dexterity with his classic 1933 recording of “Tea for Two.” Nearly blind, Tatum’s artistic vision and ability made him an icon of jazz piano, a musician whose impact will be felt for generations to come. While Tatum’s skills were undeniable, his style continues to stir controversy on whether or not he was an “official” jazz musician. Some jazz critics dismissed his playing as so much ornate window-dressing and the pianist himself as a novelty instead of a serious jazz artist; others saw him as the new and improved second coming of stride legend Fats Waller, one of Tatum’s idols.

v25_robley_peacockIn Houston, Texas where he was born in 1903 in the historic Fifth Ward district to an African-American middle-class multi-racial family, Don ‘Deadric’ Robey was by all accounts destined for business greatness. Although his parents and family had merely assumed that he’d be a great lawyer or doctor or an educator, Don had other ideas. In spite of his early academic gifts, he dropped out of school as a teenager and began a quest to make his own way as an entrepreneur.

v25_different_worldOne of my favorite sitcoms of all time is “A Different World,” the “Cosby Show” spin-off series that followed the lives of students at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college located in Virginia. Though the series had a slow first season, “A Different World” ultimately managed to captivate audiences and was critically praised for displaying an accurate depiction of life on the campus of an HBCU.

v24_Minage-Drake-WayneNicki Minaj did not perform as scheduled at Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2012 at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday (June 3), after a radio personality made a disparaging remark about the hip-hop superstar’s latest hit single at the annual event.

Minaj was supposed to hit the stage at 9:30 pm ET on Sunday night, with headliners Rick Ross and DJ Khaled to follow. However, Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg reportedly called “Starships,” the rapper’s current Hot 100 pop hit, “wack” to the Summer Jam crowd before introducing Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar earlier in the day. Soon after, Minaj’s mentor and Young Money boss Lil Wayne posted on Twitter, “Young Money ain’t doing summer jam.”
